Charles
Gagnon: Observations
February 1 to March 11, 2001
The Leonard & Bina Ellen Art Gallery
of Concordia University was pleased to present the exhibition
Charles Gagnon: Observations
from February 1 to March 11, 2001.
A leading Canadian
artist, Charles Gagnon's career is distinguished by numerous international
and national solo and group exhibitions and his works are represented
in major public and private collections. This exhibition assembled
eighty black and white photographs produced by Gagnon over the
past thirty years. The selection of works served to demonstrate
the artist's ongoing investigations into the photographic medium
and reveals the underlying philosophical tenets that have guided
his practice. Portraying both the natural and urban landscape,
these small scale, yet powerfully evocative images, raised meaningful
questions regarding the intangible nature of lived experience
and allude to the artist's ongoing commitment to the exploration
of the metaphysical dimension of human existence.

Laura
Vickerson: Trace
February
1 to - March 11, 2001
The
Leonard & Bina Ellen Art Gallery of Concordia University was
pleased to present Trace an
installation by Laura Vickerson from February 1 - March 11, 2001.
Over the past years Calgary-based artist Laura Vickerson has been
exploring notions of ephemerality through objects and processes
which implicate the viewer through their incorporation of the
quotidian. In the installation Vickerson veiled the gallery in
layers of translucent curtains, creating a gently enfolding space
which seemed to breathe and sigh when stirred by small air currents
and the viewer's movements. Images which capture different intensities
of light and shadow were projected onto this softly billowing
surface, revolving around the space in slow dissolve. The act
of witnessing these images in a devised space causes a heightened
awareness of temporality, the "tempus fugit," and the beauty of
the passing moment.
The
exhibition was curated by Lynn Beavis
and was accompanied by a bilingual brochure.
